Training and Workshops
With time, newer technologies have emerged, and we adopt the feasible technologies at our dry waste center. Regular trainings are organized to keep Safai Sathis updated on the new technologies and technicalities, to avoid any occupational hazard.
Trainings Conducted at Dry Waste Center
First Aid
Getting injured during work is a very common occurrence while working directly in waste picking. We have a first aid facility at the dry waste center. However, in case of emergencies, Safai Sathis should be able to support each other independently. Bi-annually training sessions are conducted, wherein basic first aid is taught to Safai Sathis.
Fire Safety
Dry waste centers deal with materials with high calorific value and has a potential hazard of ignition through external agents like flash, electric spark, nearby fire, etc.
We have installed the required capacity of fire extinguishers and sand buckets at the dry waste facility with safe fire exits. We conduct fire safety trainings and mock fire drills to educate our Safai Sathis on the following:
- Evacuate the work area immediately
- Notify nearby fire station and police department
- Fighting fire with portable fire extinguisher in case of small fire
- Adhering to precaution norms
- Mock fire drill to learn on operating fire extinguishers
It is imperative to remind our staff, Safai Sathis and visitors alike, to not smoke, burn any waste on the site, or indulge in explosive items at site.
Occupational Health and Safety Workshop
We have jointly developed a module with our partners on safai sathi occupational health and safety, as Safai Sathis are at a constant risk. While sorting waste – hands, feet and eyes are directly exposed to any type of toxic chemicals, domestic hazardous & mixed waste (at times) impacting internal organs as well. To protect the Safai Sathis from diseases, masks, uniforms, glares, shoes and gloves form an important part of personal protective gear.
With the COVID-19 coronavirus spreading infections, learning about occupational health and safety is of utmost importance. Cleaning of PPEs and storing them in a secure place are also a part of the curriculum. Safai sathis are educated with facts and figures. Any disbeliefs or myths that exist are countered with scientific explanation.
Financial Planning
Safai sathis belong to the economically weaker section of society. With the help of financial planning, Safai Sathis can plan sending their children to school, college, buy property or rent, save money for their enterprise, for travelling to new places, for their old age, amongst many different dreams that our Safai Sathis have.
We take sessions with Safai Sathis for their financial prosperity. We mediate the following discussions with them:
- Life events and expenses
- Income at various ages
- Reducing expenses and increasing income
- Monthly planning and budgeting
- Investing money at safe places such as deposits, mutual funds, etc.
