Extended Producer Responsibility(EPR)

In terms of environmental policy, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) means that producers have the responsibility for the entire life cycle of the products that they introduce into the market, from the time of their design until the end of their life, which includes the disposal and recycling of their waste.

Challenges in Incorporating EPR

While legislative frameworks mandate that all plastic manufacturers and brand owners work on waste collection systems, the clarity on how the collection should be made is not clear. Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016 (PWM Rules), states that all the companies that use plastic packaging must register as a “producer” or “brand owner”. If they are in operation in more than two state, they need to register under Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)

Major problems faced by the informal workers:

  • Lack of consideration of efforts by the Safai Sathis on ground for collection of waste.
  • Safai Sathis are not getting any direct benefit of EPR as most of the PIBOs prefer to work with companies and recyclers in order to decrease their cost of investment in the collection and recycling process.
  • Not getting sufficient money to cover the expenses for diverting low value waste to recyclers and co-processors.
  • Despite working in this field for generations, informal aggregators and recyclers cannot follow the compliances set by the government because they lack understanding and confidence in the formal system, and ultimately get sidelined by the entire process as a result.
  • Lack of knowledge and understanding about EPR rules and requirements.

Our Approach

  • We assist PIBOs in making a cost effective project which can justify the hard work of Safai Sathis and fulfil their EPR targets.
  • We collect an equivalent amount of waste from the generators and segregate it with the help of Safai Sathis.
  • Send the segregated waste to Registered recyclers for eco-friendly recycling.
  • We provide an EPR certificate along with all the supporting documents for the waste collected on a monthly basis.
  • We provide complete traceability of the waste recycling process.
  • Submit Monthly Report and Quarterly Report for the completed tonnage.
  • Submit CA Audited certificate to justify the funds utilised under the project.
