Health

Due to the hazardous working environments and lack of occupational safety and health (OSH), waste pickers regularly face risks of diseases, infections and injuries by being exposed to toxic materials, contaminated waste, or sharp-edged items. At times, accidents occur too due to unforeseen circumstances.

Provision of PPE Kits

Aasra provides full PPE kits to Safai Sathis for basic safety and working conditions.

Basic First Aid Facility

At the Swachhata Kendra, basic first aid kit is available to the Safai Sathis for minor injuries, if any. Mr. Haider Ali Sayyed, Founder-President of Aasra Welfare Association, also personally takes care of Safai Sathis injuries and diseases. Many times these Safai Sathis do not get required treatment in that case our founder helps them to get medical assistance and smooth recovery.

Awareness Campaigns

Safai sathis have limited access to accurate and verified information. Due to lack of education, many myths are discussed around the community in healing of a certain medical condition. We try to impart scientific temperament to our Safai Sathis and provide them with proper clinical consultation.

Aasra conducts Awareness campaigns on health and safety, reasons for getting infected and possible preventions and cures. A glimpse at the various campaigns designed and conducted at Aasra

  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Hepatitis B & C
  • Diabetes and other hereditary diseases
  • Mental Health
  • Menstrual education
  • Reproductive Health

Health Check-up Camps

Regular health check-up camps are organized at the premises to ensure Safai Sathis are in good health.

  • Quarterly Camps
    • General Health Camp- Basic Consultation on Health: Full-body checkup – covers blood pressure, oral health and hygiene, body-mass index and blood sugar testing. This camp is arranged at the MRF as well as designated safai sathi community areas.

  • Half-Yearly Camps
    • Tetanus Camp: Tetanus (TT) is a mandatory vaccine required by Safai Sathis every 6 months as they occasionally come across sharp objects in their daily work life and don’t give serious attention to injuries while at work. Thus, semi-annually TT camps are organized at the MRF as well as designated safai sathi community areas.

    • Dermatologist Camp: Skin infections are a common problem in Safai Sathis due to immediate contact with different kinds of waste, long working hours, sweating etc., despite wearing PPEs at work. Dermatologist Camps are arranged at the MRF for our Inhouse Safai Sathis along with walk-in participation by other Safai Sathis and beneficiaries in the camp.

  • Yearly Camps
    • Eye Check-up: Slight blindness and cataract is another major problem faced by Safai Sathis. We organize eye-checkup camps for consultations and required medications. This camp is arranged at the MRF as well as designated safai sathi community areas.
    • Blood Test: To check the health of the organs such as kidney, liver, thyroid, heart, blood checkups are conducted. Safai sathis are also consulted for any medical condition faced. This camp is arranged at the MRF as well as designated safai sathi community areas based on available funding sources.
